Rethinking Fashion - our latest report

Rethinking Fashion as if people and the planet actually matter is the first discussion document released by the Freedom Clothing Project, the Coventry based fashion think-and-do tank. We argue that the global fashion industry is a huge Leviathan - a scourge which holds millions captive and causes immense environmental and social damage.

We further argue that attempts to create 'ethical' clothing expose some of the most vulnerable communities to the whims and vagaries of the international market and that the orthodox position that 'Trade is better than Aid' is a mistake.

In conclusion we suggest a way forward which involves an ethical premium on local production, a culture of 'make-do, mend and Do It Yourself' and the vision to see two million tonnes a year of waste clothing as a mountain of potential rather than a disposal headache.
